Moose Lake Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church (1892-1926)
The Kalevala Finnish Evangelical National Church (1926-)
The original name of the church was "Moose Lake Finnish Evangelical Lutheran
Church" because there was no Kalevala Township at the time.
The church was organized March 13, 1892. It's president was Erick Westerback (Erkki
Westerbacka). John Peterson (Korhonen) was secretary, Tobias Oja was deacon. Robert
Ostrom, Peter Forse and Enoch Erickson were trustees.
On March 13, 1892 Enoch and Anna Sophia Erickson donated one acre of land on their
homestead where a church was finally built.
Because of a lack of ordained clergy in the wilderness, Erick Westerback served as it's
first lay minister. Erick Westerback served as minister until he was replaced by Rev. E.
V. Niemi who served for 46 years. After Rev. Niemi's retirement, J. E. Nopola, E. P.
Lampela and George Wick served the congregation.
In 1902 the congregation joined the National Synod.
On January 3, 1926, the name of the church was amended to "The Kalevala Finnish
Evangelical National Church".
The original church building survived until 1915 when it was struck by lightning. The new
church managed to survive the 1918 fire at which time it was used as a shelter by many
people including the National Guard and Red Cross.
The last gathering was an "Old Settlers Picnic" that was held in 1932. The last
service conducted in the church was a funeral in July, 1962.
The National church eventually joined the Missouri Synod of the Lutheran church.
The church building was eventually sold to a private party on the condition that the terms
of sale not include the church bell. The bell was installed at St. Peter's Lutheran church
in Moose Lake in 1975.

First Finnish Methodist Church, Salem
A Methodist congregation was formed in 1891 in Split Rock Township, seven miles from Moose
Lake. On NW side of Michaelson's farm in Split Rock Twp a land company donated five acres
of land for a church and a cemetery.A chapel of timber was built next year. The church got
the name First Finnish Methodist Church, Salem Jan 3, 1904 when a new church building was
taken into use. At that time the church had nine members. Later a church was built on the
same property. The church buildings was destroyed in the 1918 fire. In 1933 the Catholics
bought the school building and the congregation donated the land to the Catholic church.

A congregation was organized Aug 28, 1905, 22 members joining, by Rev. Matti Lehtonen.
In Nashwauk, there was a Finnish meeting place, a hall, it sold later and the money was
given to the English Methodist Church, when that church was erected, with the promise that
the Finnish Methodists could use it, when they needed it. The Finnish members have mostly
been transferred to the English Church.
