The book "Amerikan Suomalaisia vv. 1922-1927 I" was compiled by Werner Nikander and printed in Hancock, Michigan in 1927 (444 pages). Nikander collected data about Finns in the United States for several years. His intention was to publish a book and use the earnings to help the Hancock Bethany Hospital which had great financial problems. It took a long time to collect the data and pictures because he did not get the material in spite of promises. The hospital got several thousands of dollars from Nikander when the book finally was published.

The book has an index (or actually four indexes) with people mentioned in the text. Angela A. Kauppila-York wrote the indexes on computer (with the help of Joe Carlson) and posted them on Finngen. The original indexes in the book listed only names, while the indexes posted on Finngen also list home towns. The four indexes are now joined and published with the permission of Angela.
