Death Certificates of Finns in King County, Washington, 1892-1947


The State of Washington did not require that counties record deaths until 1907. Prior to that time records (if maintained at all) were kept at the county level and were often incomplete and inconsistent. Records of deaths in King County from 1891 to 1907 survive on microfilm housed at the State Archives Regional Branch, located in the City of SeaTac in southwest King County. The following death records have been abstracted from microfilmed death certificates issued by the King County Health Department. Excerpted by Merle A. Reinikka.

The effort has been made to transcribe these records as accurately as possible. Obvious errors in spelling, dates, or sex were not corrected by the transcriber, in an effort to maintain the authenticity of the original record. A major difficulty stemmed from poor or unfamiliar handwriting; another was occasional poor quality of the microfilm. These conditions made errors inevitable, and this should be kept in mind by the researcher.

The complete death record may show, in addition, date of birth, race, marital state, residence, occupation, name and birthplace of father, maiden name and birthplace of mother, and cause of death.
