Marriage Records with Finnish Surnames, Carbon County, Wyoming, 1840-1905

The earliest marriage records in Carbon County, Wyoming Territory, were simple handwritten notations in the County Clerk's book of registry. "Certificate of Marriage" was the heading, followed by

"I hereby certify that on the ___day of (month), (year), in Carbon County, Wyoming Territory, I joined in marriage Mr. _____ and Miss _____ of Carbon County, Wyoming Territory, in the presence of _____. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this ______ day of (month), (year)."

The name of the Justice of the Peace followed, then the date of filing and signature of the clerk.

According to the marriage records, the first Finns to be married in Carbon County were John Krouman and Maria Luoma, on November 17, 1881.

They were the only Finnish couple to be married that year. The growth of the Finnish community within Carbon County can be shown, in part, by the number of couples getting married.

In 1882, 3 couples were married;
5 in 1884;
2 in 1885;
2 in 1886;
9 in 1887;
8 in 1888;
6 in 1889;
10 in 1890;
4 in 1891;
9 in 1892;
9 in 1893;
4 in 1894;

2 in 1895;
3 in 1896;
3 in 1897;
1 in 1898;
12 in 1899;
15 in 1900;
8 in 1901;
8 in 1902;
2 in 1903;
9 in 1904;
3 in 1905.

By 1900, the Marriage Record for Carbon County had become a three-part document. The first part, the "Marriage Affidavit," was filled out by the prospective groom, who applied for a "Marriage License" on behalf of himself and his bride. This document was signed by a notary public. The second part, the "Marriage License," authorized the marriage and was signed by the county clerk. The third part, the "Certificate of Marriage," which recorded that the actual marriage had taken place, was later filled out by the minister or justice of the peace (who was warned of a $500 fine if they did not return the document within three months after performing the ceremony).

Thus each document might contain two different handwritings - and in the case of the Finnish surnames - two or three entirely different spellings of the names. As we have seen on other documents, the clerks were hard pressed to spell Finnish surnames. Thus, I have tried to rely on the spelling given by the minister or justice of the peace - the last person to fill in the documents. This part of the document also contained the names of the witnesses to the marriage.

The first Finns to be married in Carbon County were married by justices of the peace, since Finnish ministers did not arrive until 1884, when William Williamson, most likely on his way across Wyoming, stopped in Carbon on July 16, long enough to marry Mats Killiaho and Marie Eskola. The next recorded marriage ceremony performed by a Finnish minister would not be until March 3, 1887, by Rev. William Williamson, who remained in Carbon that year. Subsequent ministers in Carbon County were F. E. Ohde, Henry Tanner, A. Standstrom, K. A. A. Koski, Alex Granholm, J. W. Eloheimo, Adolph Riippa, Wilhelm A. Mandell, and Walfred Wilen.

It is impossible to know if the Finns married by justices of the peace did so by choice - or because a minister of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church was not available at the time of their marriage. Several of the ministers divided their time among the various Wyoming congregations, and Carbon historians relate that Henry Tanner rode the train from Carbon to Rock Springs, 140 miles to the west, every other Sunday, until he eventually relocated to Rock Springs.
