Online migration records for individuals. A computerized database of the following three sources is currently being compiled: Passport records (from the year 1890 to 1950), passenger records of the Finnish Steamship Company (from the year 1892 to 1910) and information on Finns deceased abroad (from 1918 to 1950). "To date about 400,000 entries have been made." Online records are still in Finnish but easy to use; i.e. go to Siirtolais-rekisteri, then to Haku internet-tietokannasta and type family name in sukunimi space. This website also provides lots more information on the Institute of Migration, Finland, such as statistics, articles, publications, contacts and links.

Very nice website. The largest website on civic heraldry. This site is completely devoted to civic heraldry, i.e. coats of arms of countries, states, provinces, towns, villages etcetera. The site is not restricted to any country. No data on coats of arms of families or individual persons. Finland with 540 such pictures is one of the largest collections given. Usually only a picture is shown but where available, the website includes descriptions, meanings and history.

Finnish Immigration to North America
- 100 Years of Emigrant Ships from Norway
Migration from Northern Europe to America via the Port of Hull, 1848-1914. "The Transatlantic Crossing, Norwegian Emigrants on the Atlantic" contains a highly descriptive account of the transatlantic journey (in the 1800s) which would probably have been similar for Finnish emigrants. Another article entitled Trains, Shelters and Ships (mostly about Jewish migration) contains interesting information on numbers of transmigrants going to various cities in England, (e.g., Liverpool) North Eastern Railway, etc..

Passenger manifests cover arrivals at Ellis Island from 1892 through 1924. Many Finns came through Ellis Island and the Port of New York. - Brief History of New Sweden in America
A nice easy reading site. Includes a map showing Sweden's reach in the mid 1600s. The kingdom included part of Norway, all of Finland and stretched into Russia. Sweden's control of portions of modern Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Germany made the Baltic Sea essentially a Swedish lake. Sweden sought to extend its influence in the New World. Map shows the route taken by ships sailing from Sweden to Delaware Bay where they established the first European settlement in the Delaware Valley. "During the next seventeen years, twelve more Swedish expeditions left the homeland for New Sweden. A total of eleven vessels and some 600 Swedes and Finns reached their destination. The colony eventually consisted of farms and small settlements along both banks of the Delaware River into modern Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland."

- Gogebic Range Directories
Transcriptions of Gogebic Range Directories from 1892-1947. These directories include the towns and cities of Gogebic County, Michigan & Iron County, Wisconsin, an area where many Finns settled to work in the Iron mines. The 1892 Directory has some Finnish names, but most Finns came to the area around 1896 - 1910. The 1912 Directory is filled with names, addresses & occupations of many of these families. Transcription of 1892, 1912, 1928, 1938 and 1947 directories is completed. The 1947 Directory includes the entire Gogebic Range...(all small towns included). A site search engine to find surnames on the 200+ pages is available.

It has been estimated that some 1000 Finns lived in the United States during the 1860s, and of this number perhaps as many as one hundred Finns fought in the Northern Army and Navy (Ilmonen, 1919:158)". The Immigration History Research Center has relevant Finnish collections. "Included in the Finnish American collection are three sets of microfilmed "America" letters. Numbering over 14,000, these letters were written by American and Canadian immigrants to friends and relatives in Finland between 1890 and the 1960s."

Pier 21 was designated a Canadian National Historic Site on July 18, 1998. This website contains info about Pier 21, including The Wall of Honour, a unique and personal way to pay tribute to one's heritage. It will honour those who set foot on Canadian soil through Pier 21 or who entered Canada through another gateway. A campaign is currently underway to transform the original pier (Pier 21) on Halifax's waterfront into an exciting national immigration heritage center. This website also contains a list of ships that have arrived and/or departed from Pier 21 and a brief history of immigration to Canada. Many Finns arrived in North America through Canadian ports especially Halifax, Nova Scotia.

- Social Security Death Index (SSDI) in USA
SSDI at Ancestry.com. "The Death Master File (DMF) from the Social Security Administration (SSA) contains over 65 million records created from SSA payment records. It contains the records of those for whom the lump sum death benefit was paid. That lump sum benefit could have been requested by a family member, an attorney, a mortuary, etc. This file includes the following information on each decedent, if the data is available to the SSA: Last name, First name, Social security Number (State issued), Birth date, Death date, Last residence/Lump sum payment."

U.S. Department of the Interior - Bureau Of Land Management - General Land Office (GLO) Records Automation web site. "Land patents document the transfer of land ownership from the federal government to individuals. Our land patent records include the information recorded when ownership was transferred." Could be useful for obtaining info on immigrant ancestors who were U.S. land grant recipients. One can download a scanned copy of the original document or can obtain a certified copy online (fee applies to latter).

Others from Nurmo, Kurikka, Ilmajoki, Peräseinäjoki, Karijoki, Alavus, Sievi, Rovaniemi, Kauhajoki, Pihlajavesi, Honkajoki, Ylistaro, Ylistaro, Kuhmoinen, Tampere, Seinäjoki, Lappajärvi, Kymi and Virrat. The last place of Finnish residence for the emigrants was also mainly Jalasjärvi.
