Information about useful vocabularies and dictionaries are compiled on this page. The language of medieval documents is Latin but Swedish started to become more common as a language of bureaucracy from the 14th century onward. Swedish is the language of church records until the end of the 19th century even in Finnish speaking parishes. In addition to different languages, the genealogist will come across abbreviations and obsolete professional titles and causes of death in church records. Old dictionaries and encyclopedias can be of use in understanding a bygone world.
